3 Indian Dishes Makes to Top 50 Breakfast Dishes

From the crispy dosas of the South to the fluffy dhoklas of Gujarat, and from the flaky khastas to the spicy stuffed kachoris of North India, the diversity is unmatched.

Every region in India offers its unique morning specialities, reflecting local ingredients, climate, and culture. Whether it’s a light and healthy poha, a hearty aloo paratha, or a rich plate of chole bhature, Indian breakfasts cater to every palate.

Recently, three breakfast dishes from India were named among the 50 Best Breakfasts in the world by Taste Atlas, a global food and travel guide. The dishes are ranked based on verified audience ratings.

Turkey’s Kahvalt, Serbia’s Komplet Lepinja and Libya’s Sfinz are the top 3 breakfast dishes as per Taste Atlas rankings.

Misal Pav from Maharashtra is ranked 18th, Paratha (as a broad category) occupies the 23rd position and Delhi’s Chole Bhature is ranked 32nd overall.

Interestingly, all three Indian breakfast dishes are typically made using vegan and plant-based ingredients.

Misal

Misal is a popular spicy Maharashtrian dish made with sprouted moth beans (matki), served with a spicy curry called tarri, topped with farsan, onions, lemon, and coriander, and typically enjoyed with pav (bread rolls).

This vegan and spicy mixture was placed 18th on the list with a 4.5 rating. TasteAtlas in its Misal description mentioned, “it is highly nutritious, easy to prepare, and relatively inexpensive; it remains one of the most popular meals in Maharashtra.

Paratha

Ranked 23rd on the list with a 4.4 rating, Paratha is a layered flatbread known for its comforting texture, rich flavour, and endless variety.

The Paratha is made by rolling wheat dough into thin rounds and cooking it on a hot griddle with little oil until golden and crisp.

The layering can be plain or stuffed with a wide range of vegan fillings, such as spiced potatoes, onion, cauliflower, radish, lentils, or even jaggery and coconut for sweet versions.

Though popular as a breakfast option in North India, it is loved across the country. Parathas are typically enjoyed with vegetable curries, curd, pickles, or chutneys.

Chole Bhature

Ranked 32nd with a 4.4 rating, Chole Bhature is a popular breakfast dish, especially cherished in Delhi and Punjab, known for its bold flavours and satisfying richness.

Bhature is a deep-fried, fluffy bread made from a fermented dough of refined flour (maida) and eaten with the Chole, chickpeas cooked in a flavorful gravy of onion, tomatoes and aromatic spices. When fried, Bhature puffs up into golden balls, which makes them delectable.

Apart from being served as a breakfast, Chole Bhature is equally popular throughout the day. It is often served with pickles, onions, and green chillies.
