Battery Tech Startup Offgrid Energy Labs Offers a Zinc-based Energy Storage

In September 2025, Delhi-NCR-based Offgrid Energy Labs raised $15 million in Series A funding led by Archean Chemical Industries Ltd, with participation from Ankur Capital and earlier support from Shell Ventures.

Offgrid Energy Labs is a battery storage technology startup specialising in ZincGel®, a patented zinc-bromide platform for safe, sustainable, and scalable stationary energy storage.

Founded in 2018 by Tejas Kusurkar, Rishi Srivastava, Brindan Tulachan, and Ankur Agarwal at SIIC-IIT Kanpur, ZincGel® uses non-toxic, widely available materials, overcoming safety and supply chain limitations associated with traditional lithium-ion batteries.

The battery platform eliminates toxic and flammable elements, offers competitive costs, and reduces manufacturing capital expenditure by up to 80%.

Furthermore, the technology delivers up to 40–50% lower emissions compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, enabling energy time-shifting, net-zero industrial operations, data centre backup, and remote microgrid/telecom storage.

The company plans to use the investments to support a 10 MWh demonstration manufacturing facility in the UK, expansion of R&D, commercial certification, and the development of blueprints for a gigafactory in India.

Currently, Offgrid holds over 25 IP families (50+ assets) across chemistry, materials, and manufacturing, enabling tailored battery solutions for diverse stationary applications.

The battery technology offers significant benefits to India’s clean energy future, grid reliability, and sustainability goals by addressing critical gaps in stationary energy storage.

Battery storage unlocks higher renewable penetration, reduces curtailment, and helps utilities and industries meet net-zero operations and peak-shifting requirements without relying on fossil-powered backup systems.

Offgrid Energy Labs’ solution will enable safe, cost-effective, and long-duration storage of solar and wind energy, allowing renewable power collected during the day to be used for evening and night demand, thereby stabilising the grid and supporting India’s target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030

The battery-tech startup is advancing the global battery landscape with its solutions, targeting grid, industrial, and remote storage markets, and is rapidly scaling up for commercial deployment in India and abroad.
