Defined by the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, Botswana, in Southern Africa, is set to release eight cheetahs to India under Project Cheetah.
The announcement was made during the President of India, Droupadi Murmu’s, visit to Botswana. Indian President, along with the President of Botswana, Duma Gideon Boko, visited the Mokolodi Nature Reserve, where leaders witnessed the release of captured cheetahs originating from the Ghanzi region.
The cheetahs will remain in the quarantine facility and will be monitored by experts. This event marks Botswana’s symbolic donation of eight cheetahs to India under Project Cheetah.
In 2022, the Indian government launched a one-of-a-kind wildlife conservation initiative, Project Cheetah, to reintroduce the big cat into India from Africa. This was because Cheetahs went extinct in the middle of the 20th century due to various factors.
Despite challenges associated with the wildlife translocation effort, the Cheetah conservation effort has shown steady progress. The reintroduced cheetahs in India not only gradually adapted to their surroundings but also propagated. Studies made on the project have shown Cheetah’s population to be stable and growing.
Initially, the animals were translocated from Namibia and South Africa to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Therefore, this event signifies the beginning of a new chapter in India-Botswana cooperation in wildlife conservation.
The African nation has the world’s largest population of cheetahs, with approximately 25% of the world’s remaining wild cheetahs, underscoring their significance to Botswana.
The Kalahari Desert, which occupies almost all of Botswana, is characterised by long chains of dunes and little vegetation, and is still home to many large animals, including giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, leopards, wild hunting dogs, and cheetahs.
Earlier this year, a second home for Cheetahs in India was found in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh, where two members of the endangered species were released.
