Kolkata-based green startup Amwoodo has raised US$4 million (~Rs 34 crores) in Pre-Series A funding led by Rainmatter, a venture fund backed by Zerodha, with participation from Adventz Group, Thinkuvate, and Caspian.
Founded in 2019 by Agni Mitra, Amwoodo has been at the forefront of providing plastic alternatives made from bamboo, offering eco-friendly solutions to everyday essentials.
With a bamboo-first approach, the company offers a wide range of products, including personal care and oral care, as well as hotel amenities, office stationery, corporate gifts, and building materials, all designed to replace plastic in daily life.
Amwoodo bamboo products include combs, toothbrushes, razors, slippers, bottles, mugs, compostable sanitary bags, and towels. Its product range also comprises bamboo polymer composites and veneers used in building construction.
The company directly sources its raw materials from bamboo farmers in India’s northeast region and collaborates with artisans to manufacture its products in its facility in Kolkata.
Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, allowing for frequent harvesting without the need for deforestation. It regenerates naturally from its root system, eliminating the need for replanting and thereby preserving soil health while reducing land degradation.
Amwoodo products made from bamboo are naturally biodegradable and compostable, unlike plastics that persist for centuries in landfills and oceans.
The company has established strong partnerships with leading businesses, including Himalaya Wellness Company, Bombay Shaving Company, and hospitality chains such as ITC Hotels, Taj Hotels, and Leela. It also offers its products in the Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) space through online marketplaces.
With this new funding, the company will scale its production capacity to meet growing domestic and global demand, enter the D2C market through its own marketplace, launch other plastic-alternative brands, and strengthen engagement while expanding in bamboo-growing regions.
In April 2024, Amwoodo received $1 million in funding from Rainmatter.
