Ethiopia planted 700 million trees in a single day as part of its Green Legacy project. The campaign, now in its seventh year, is a flagship program with an aim of planting 50 billion trees by 2026.
The Green Legacy Initiative was launched in 2019 by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to enhance the green cover across both urban and rural Ethiopia.
The nationwide tree-planting effort aims to combat land degradation, promote climate resilience, enhance biodiversity, encourage sustainable land use, and contribute to Ethiopia’s ongoing Clean Ethiopia Campaign goals.
The Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is the primary body responsible for resource conservation and environmental protection in Ethiopia
Speaking at the tree plantation event, the EPA Director General, H.E. Eng. Lelise Neme emphasised that this campaign not only aligns with the Green Legacy Initiative’s target of planting 50 billion seedlings by 2026 but also reinforces the “Clean Ethiopia: Stewardship to Culture” movement, which integrates tackling environmental pollution into everyday community practices.
The EPA reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating on regional efforts, fostering community engagement, and ensuring proper follow-up to promote the growth and survival of planted seedlings.
