Gujarat has emerged as a leading hub for wind energy projects in India, with major installations such as the Khavda Hybrid Renewable Energy Park, Adani Green Energy Wind Projects, and NTPC REL Dayapar Wind Farms.
The western Indian state Gujarat has a substantial lead over other states in installed wind energy capacity, with 16086 MW as of 30th June 2026.
The barren salt deserts of the Kutch region specifically are known for multiple wind energy projects, including the Adani Green Energy 300 MW Wind Project, which produces roughly 1,091 million units of clean energy annually.
Another advantage for Gujarat is that its extensive coastline provides high-velocity, consistent onshore and offshore wind potential.
Gujarat is followed by Tamil Nadu in second place with 12,273 MW, Karnataka in third with 8,896 MW, Maharashtra in fourth with 6,318 MW, and Rajasthan in fifth with 5,516 MW.

To support wind energy in the country, the Indian Government has taken several initiatives.
The government interventions include the laying of new transmission lines and the creation of new substation capacity, both funded under the Green Energy Corridor Scheme to evacuate renewable power.
Furthermore, Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges have been waived for inter-state sale of solar and wind power for projects commissioned by 30th June 2025, with graded ISTS charges for those to be commissioned thereafter.
To augment transmission infrastructure needed for a steep renewable energy trajectory, a transmission plan has been prepared till 2030.
In 2024, the Indian government approved a Rs. 7453 crore Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme to set up India’s first offshore wind energy projects.
Additionally, in December 2023, the Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules, 2023 were notified by the Ministry of External Affairs to regulate the grant of leases for offshore areas for the development of offshore wind energy projects.
As the country strives to achieve its 500 GW non-fossil target by 2030, India’s wind energy will play a key role.
