Hyderabad Wins the Best Green Transport Initiatives Award

Addressing the Valedictory Session of the Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2025, Minister Manohar Lal emphasised that urban mobility planning in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities must begin so that, when these cities evolve into Tier-1 urban centres, they are already well-planned and future-ready.

The Minister also underscored the need to expand the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) beyond Delhi–NCR to other major metropolitan regions, such as Chennai, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, to strengthen regional connectivity further and reduce travel time between urban clusters.

Further, he suggested that Metro authorities may explore introducing premium or luxury compartments for high-income passengers to encourage them to use public transport, thereby making public transit more inclusive, aspirational, and financially sustainable.

The three-day Urban Mobility India Conference was held from 7th to 9th November in Gurugram, Haryana. The conference featured more than 170 speakers and more than 1,600 delegates from 8 countries.

UMI concluded with the distribution of awards across different categories of Urban Transport, recommended by the Awards Selection Committee, headed by high-level Government officials and experts in the field.

Hyderabad won the Best Green Transport Initiatives award, with Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (TGREDCO) receiving it. TGREDCO is the state government’s nodal agency responsible for implementing all renewable energy programs, driving electric vehicle adoption, and overseeing various energy efficiency schemes.

Chennai was named the winner of the Best Public Transport System, and the award was presented to the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) Ltd.
