Under the Indian government’s ambitious rooftop solar scheme, more than 2.6 million rooftop solar systems have been installed across the country.
In February 2024, the Indian government launched an ambitious scheme, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), touted as the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative.
Implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the scheme aims to achieve rooftop solar (RTS) installations in 10 million (one crore) residential households by FY 2026-27.
The PMSG: MBY is a demand-driven scheme wherein all residential consumers in the country with a grid-connected electricity connection to the local DISCOM can avail the benefits of the scheme for the installation of rooftop solar systems by applying to the scheme’s National Portal.
The entire process from application to CFA disbursal is online through the National Portal. Once all credentials are entered correctly on the National portal, the average processing time for the CFA is around 15 days after the consumer makes a redemption request.
Since its launch in February 2024, a total of 26,19,879 rooftop solar systems have been installed across the country (as on 19.03.2026), an addition of 674,121, in comparison to 19,45,758 in December 2025.
Under the scheme, through these installations, a total of 9,566.89 MW rooftop solar capacity has been added across the country.
Furthermore, under the PMSG: MBY, an amount of Rs 17,967.53 crore has been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to the scheme’s beneficiaries as on 19.03.2026.
The government has taken several measures to expedite DISCOM approvals and payments under the scheme, including an online process that runs from application to disbursal of the subsidy directly into the residential consumer’s bank account through the National Portal.
The government has simplified the regulatory approval process by waiving the technical feasibility requirement and introducing an auto load enhancement up to 10 kW. The net metering agreement has been included in the application on the National Portal.
To ensure effective implementation of the scheme, MNRE and REC Ltd., as the National Programme Implementing Agency (NPIA) for PMSG: MBY, work closely with all DISCOMs.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is set to benefit Indian in achieving net-zero goals by 2070. It has been estimated that the RTS installation in one crore households will generate renewable electricity of 1,000 billion units, resulting in a reduction of 720 million tons of CO2eq emissions over the 25-year lifetime of rooftop solar projects.
