In February 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an ambitious scheme, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), touted as the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative.
The scheme aimed to achieve rooftop solar (RTS) installations in one crore households in the residential sector by FY 2026-27 with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore.
To ensure the economic profitability and cost-effectiveness of RTS systems for beneficiaries, in addition to Central Financial Assistance, a collateral-free loan at an interest rate of 5.75% (Repo rate plus 0.50 bps) is available for the installation of RTS systems.
As of September 2025, India’s public sector banks have sanctioned over 0.579 million loan applications totalling ₹10,907 crore, thereby increasing financial support for beneficiaries to install rooftop solar systems.
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has initiated a rooftop revolution by making solar energy accessible to many Indian households, promoting decentralised clean energy generation across the country.
As of 9th December 2025, a total of 1.945 million rooftop solar systems have been installed in India, benefiting 2.435 million households, with Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh being the top three states.
In addition, 7,71,580 consumers have benefited from zero energy charges through their rooftop solar installations.
In Gujarat, 4,93,161 rooftop solar installations have been installed, followed by Uttar Pradesh (3,02,140) and Maharashtra (3,63,811).
India is the world’s third-largest solar power producer, with 50% of its total installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources.
At the recent Eighth Session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly, India championed replicating this initiative across developing countries, particularly in Africa and small island nations.
State-wise details of progress made under the PMSGMBY (as on 09.12.2025).
