The Rise of Bamboo Startups in India: Shaping a Greener Tomorrow

In 2017, the Indian government issued a landmark revision to a law, the Indian Forest (Amendment) Ordinance, which exempted non-forest bamboo from being treated as a tree.

This change removed the legal hurdles that previously prevented bamboo cultivation. Farmers can now grow and transport bamboo from non-forest areas without permits.

Over the last few years, this change has brought a remarkable transformation to India’s bamboo sector—from a traditional rural craft material to a driver of green entrepreneurship.

Once limited to handicrafts and basic tools, bamboo is emerging as a versatile, eco-friendly industrial material, replacing traditional materials due to its rapid growth, impressive strength, and wide-ranging applications.

This shift has spurred the rise of bamboo-based startups across the country, driven by growing demand for sustainable alternatives and supportive government policies.

The demand further boosts farmers’ incomes and increases India’s green cover, particularly in the Northeastern states, which are known for India’s rich bamboo resources.

Key initiatives like the National Bamboo Mission and innovation challenges are further enabling entrepreneurs to scale new heights in bamboo cultivation, processing, and product development.

Simultaneously, these ventures create meaningful livelihoods, especially for rural and tribal communities, preserving traditional skills while ensuring economic empowerment.

This article explores the current landscape of bamboo startups in India, highlighting major players. As the sector grows, bamboo may well become central to India’s future green economy.

Leading Companies Making Bamboo Products in India

Bamboo India

Beco

Beco was born out of a decisive moment during a beach clean-up in Mumbai, when founders Aditya, Anuj, and Akshay discovered a decades-old chocolate wrapper still intact—an alarming reminder of the long-lasting impact of plastic waste.

In our interaction with Aditya Ruia, he mentioned a viral National Geographic photo of a Sea Horse entangled in an earbud, which inspired them to launch their first bamboo product in 2019.

This experience inspired them to take action against single-use plastics by creating sustainable, everyday alternatives. With a clear mission to drive positive environmental change, Beco offers eco-friendly products that replace conventional plastic-based items—each designed to make sustainable living accessible.

Their vision is to empower individuals to contribute to a greener planet through conscious consumer choices. All Beco products come in recyclable packaging, significantly reducing environmental impact compared to plastic packaging.

Additionally, Mumbai-based Beco is also one of the companies that make eco-friendly cleaning products. It uses its innovative Cocozyme Technology, which harnesses the natural cleaning power of coconuts, offering safe, effective products without harmful chemicals.

Backed by strong government initiatives, rising environmental consciousness, and growing demand for sustainable alternatives, bamboo startups in India are well-positioned to scale both locally and globally.

From luxury furnishings to biodegradable daily-use products, these enterprises reflect India’s capacity for innovation rooted in tradition.

However, challenges such as inconsistent supply chains, limited scalability, and high production costs remain. To succeed, startups must invest in design, quality, and responsible manufacturing while leveraging policy support and community engagement.
