In September 2024, India’s government announced the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme to promote electric mobility in the country. The financial allocation for the PM E-DRIVE scheme is Rs 10,900 cr (~US$1.2 bn) till 31st March 2026.
The scheme under the aegis of India’s Ministry of Heavy Industries has introduced e-vouchers for electric vehicle buyers to avail demand incentives under the PM E-DRIVE scheme.
Demand incentives of Rs 5,000 per kWh in FY 2024-25 and Rs 2,500 per kWh in FY 2025-26 are provided for e-2W and e-3W categories. These incentives are capped at 15 percent of the ex-factory price.
At the time of purchase of the EV, the PM E-DRIVE portal will generate an Aadhaar-authenticated e-Voucher for the buyer. This e-voucher will be signed by the buyer and submitted to the dealer to avail of the demand incentives under the scheme.
A total of 5,05,645 e-Vouchers have been generated and availed by EV customers under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, as on 31st March 2025.
It is estimated that the sale of 1.027 million EVs under the PM E-DRIVE scheme has led to a reduction of 230K tonnes of carbon emissions.
