At the 76th Republic Day Parade, more than two dozen tableaux rolled down at the Kartavya Path, New Delhi.
The parade featured tableaux of 16 States and Union Territories and 10 Ministries on the theme ‘Swarnim Bharat: Virasat Aur Vikas’. These tableaux showcased India’s diverse strengths and constantly evolving cultural inclusiveness marching into a glorious future.
We have picked five tableaux that brought sustainability and environmental protection to the forefront.
Chandigarh Tableau
The Union Territory of Chandigarh’s tableau showed a blend of heritage, architecture, clean energy initiatives and its gardens under the theme ‘the city beautiful’.
The iconic Rock Garden, created by Nek Chand, the Rooster Bird Fountain at City Plaza and the Japanese Garden featured prominently on the Chandigarh tableau. A giant and colourful butterfly was shown fluttering its wings, signifying Chandigarh’s green spaces.
The rear section of the tableau had a couple of wind turbines and a picture of floating solar panels on Dhanas Lake considered the largest floating solar lake in India was pasted on the side.
The tableau also had yoga enthusiasts and cyclists, demonstrating Chandigarh’s ability to support a healthy, sustainable and active lifestyle.
Andhra Pradesh Tableau
The state of Andhra Pradesh presented the ‘Etikoppaka Bommalu’ tableau, featuring eco-friendly wooden toys, famous for their vibrant colours and intricate designs.
This is a 400-year-old craft of making traditional wooden toys in Etikoppaka, Andhra Pradesh.
The process involves carving out the wood and applying plant-based natural dyes and other organic materials. The toys have a smooth, glossy finish, making them popular among children and consumers.
However, due to cheaper, mass-produced, plastic toys, the Etikoppaka toys are finding fewer takers, therefore this tableau highlighted the necessity to promote eco-friendly toys and encourage local business.
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Tableau
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MSRE) tableau showcased India’s evolving clean energy landscape.
The front part of the tableau featured solar energy initiatives like rooftop solar and solar panel manufacturing, while the rear part of the MNRE tableaux showed India’s progress in wind energy and green hydrogen.
The four rotating wind turbines on the tableau marked India’s position as the 4th-largest installer of non-fossil fuel energy capacity worldwide.
Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Tableau
India’s Republic Day Parade saw the first-time participation of the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), “Honouring India’s Indigenous Cattle Breeds as Icons of Sustainable Rural Growth”.
The tableau showed a giant replica of an indigenous cow, and contributions of rural communities, especially women, who play a significant role in dairy farming and cooperative activities, empowering households and fostering sustainable livelihoods.
Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Tableau
The Union Territory of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu tableau highlighted the region’s wildlife, bird species and fishing culture under the theme of ‘Daman Aviary Bird Park.’
The front section depicted Daman’s bird population including some rare and exotic species. The centerpiece showcased the Yellowfin Tuna, found along Diu’s Arabian Sea coastline.
The rear section displayed coastal sand, shells, and marine artefacts found in the union territory. The tableau also celebrated the coastal lifestyle and traditions of the region.
