Foundation Stone for Green Hydrogen Hub Project in Andhra Pradesh

Today, the Indian Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for India’s first green hydrogen hub under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The green hydrogen hub will be established along India’s eastern coast at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The project is being developed jointly by NGEL, the renewable arm of NTPC Ltd., and New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of AP Ltd. (NREDCAP), the renewable arm of the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Spread over 1600 acres, NTPC Green Energy Limited Green Hydrogen Hub Project at Pudimadaka will include the development of a manufacturing facility, a green chemical zone, a chemical storage terminal, port infrastructure, a transmission corridor, a 7 GW substation, an 80 MLD desalination plant, an effluent treatment plant, and other facilities, making it a comprehensive operational framework.

NTPC is at the forefront of implementing green hydrogen projects in India, including for an Army location in Ladakh, blending operation in the piped natural gas network in Surat, green-hydrogen buses in the Ladakh region, etc.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, highlighted that Andhra Pradesh, due to its innovative nature, is already a significant hub for IT and technology, it is now time for the state to become a centre for futuristic technologies.

Indian government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023, with a production target of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. In the initial phase, the government plans to establish two green hydrogen hubs, one of which will be in Visakhapatnam.

Green hydrogen offers a sustainable, zero-emission fuel alternative. Produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources like solar and wind, green hydrogen is a key enabler in decarbonizing various industries like transportation and power generation.

The Green Hydrogen Hub Project at Pudimadaka entails an investment of approx. Rs. 1,85,000 Crore (US$ 21.5 bn).

This includes investment in 20 GW renewable energy capacities, making it one of India’s largest integrated green hydrogen production facilities with a capacity of producing 1500 TPD Green Hydrogen and 7500 TPD Green Hydrogen derivatives including Green Methanol, Green Urea and Sustainable Aviation Fuel, primarily targeting the export market.

The project aims to contribute significantly to the local economy and showcase Andhra Pradesh’s role as a key player in the global green energy landscape.

Besides playing a key role in India’s quest for energy independence, this project will help to achieve India’s non-fossil energy capacity target of 500 GW by 2030 and strengthen the country’s Net Zero goals.
