Reliance plans for green energy

India’s renewable capacity now stands at 209.44 GW

India hit a new milestone in renewable energy as the country witnessed exponential growth from 13.05 GW in December 2023 to around 28.64 GW in 2024 of which 24.5 GW is due to solar energy and 3.4 GW of wind capacity.

The total installed renewable capacity now stands at 209.44 GW (as of December 2024) from 180.80 GW (as of December 2023), a rise of more than 15 per cent. The majority of India’s renewable energy is from Solar followed by Wind.

Solar Energy

In 2024, solar power spearheaded this growth with the addition of 24.54 GW, reflecting a 33.47% rise in its cumulative installed capacity from 73.32 GW in 2023 to 97.86 GW in 2024.

Wind Energy

Wind energy also contributed to this expansion, with an additional 3.42 GW installed in 2024, increasing the total wind capacity to 48.16 GW, a growth of 7.64% from 2023.

Growth in Bioenergy and Small hydropower

Bioenergy has shown remarkable growth, with its installed capacity rising from 10.84 GW in December 2023 to 11.35 GW in December 2024, reflecting a 4.70% increase.

Small hydropower projects saw incremental growth, with installed capacity increasing from 4.99 GW in 2023 to 5.10 GW in 2024, representing a 2.20% rise.

Wrapping Up

In the first week of 2025, India’s first Green Hydrogen Hub in Visakhapatnam was launched, underscoring a transformative step towards clean energy and supporting India’s 500 GW non-fossil target by 2030.

With 20 GW capacity, the hub will drive renewable energy and green chemical production, and position India as a global leader in green hydrogen innovation.

India is setting new records and is emerging as a global leader in renewable energy with a significant surge in non-fossil capacity, driving the nation forward and paving the way for a cleaner and brighter future.

Progress in India’s renewable energy journey is made because of several schemes and policy decisions. However, given the ambitious clean energy goals, India should be cautious of the path ahead.
