Sustainable packaging startup, Bambrew, has raised Rs 90 crore (~$10.3 million) in a strategic funding round led by Ashok Goel, former Managing Director of Essel Propack, along with Japanese venture capital firm Enrission India Capital.
Founded in 2018 by Vaibhav Anant, Bambrew develops alternatives to single-use plastics using plant-based materials like bamboo fibre, agro-waste, seaweed, etc.
Bambrew has clients across industries, including e-commerce, FMCG, food and beverage, retail, fashion, and manufacturing, with notable clients such as Amazon, Flipkart, Unilever, ITC Limited, Asian Paints, Nykaa, and Bata.
Over the last few months, the company has also introduced packaging products to the hotel and hospitality industry.
As awareness grows around the harmful effects of plastic waste and resource depletion, companies are adopting eco-friendly alternatives to reduce their environmental footprint. At the same time, consumers, particularly younger generations, are demanding more sustainable practices from the brands they support.
Governments are also introducing stricter regulations on single-use plastics, pushing businesses to comply with new standards.
In 2016, the Indian government introduced the Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules (Amendments in 2022), which mandate Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance for producers, importers, and brand owners using plastic packaging. Failure to comply with EPR regulations can result in penalties, fines, and even business license revocation.
Beyond compliance, sustainable packaging enhances brand reputation, offering a competitive edge in a crowded market. Although the transition may involve upfront costs, it can lead to long-term savings and efficiencies, while also encouraging innovation and unlocking new market opportunities.
As businesses increasingly shift to sustainable packaging due to a combination of environmental, consumer, and regulatory pressures, Bambrew can play a key role in enabling this transition.
The company plans to use its latest funding towards research, expansion of its manufacturing capacity, and entering the markets of the Middle East and North America.
In 2024, the Bengaluru-based startup Bambrew found a place in the Change Started Green Startup of the Year. Read the complete list.
