Don’t Look Up is a satirical movie that brings an ensemble cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, and Jonah Hill. The film tells the story of two astronomers played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence who discover a comet heading toward Earth that will likely result in the end of the world.

They first set out to inform the President of the United States played by Meryl Streep and her chief of staff, played by Jonah Hill. The political establishment instead of deciding on any immediate action sees the comet as an opportunity to boost their ratings and distract from other issues.

As time ticks away, astronomers decide to tell the world through media and news channels. Even here their discovery is met with disbelief and denial. Their story even becomes the subject of negative internet humor and memes. When the President gets embroiled in a sex scandal, she decides to divert the attention of the public by deciding to shoot down the comet. However, the mission is aborted as she is informed by her billionaire donor who sees this as an opportunity to make money because of the rare-earth minerals that are available on the comet. As the movie unfurls few other twists and turns to finally a situation where the comet hits the Earth.

The incidents that are shown in Don’t Look Up are a metaphor for the impending dangers of climate change and how there is general apathy by the government, political class, and media. The characters portrayed by award-winning actors also included elements from real-life public figures.

The movie is a satirical take on humanity’s tendency to ignore global challenges and prioritize personal interests. The subtle message to confront global challenges is extremely timely and important.
