How Does India Measure its Tiger Population

India is home to the world’s largest wild tiger population, accounting for nearly 70% of all wild tigers globally, with more than 3,600 individuals, which is more than double what it was in 2006.

While the success of tiger conservation in India can be attributed to multiple efforts by the government and non-government agencies, the counting of actual numbers of tigers is through a robust mechanism.

India has developed a science-based system to monitor and evaluate its tiger population. The approach combines field surveys, camera traps, digital technologies and scientific analysis.

The approach generates reliable data on the number of tigers in India, prey species and habitat quality. This information guides evidence-based conservation planning and adaptive management.

Estimating and continuous monitoring of the number of tigers in India strengthens habitat protection and enables informed management decisions across tiger landscapes.

Measuring Tiger Population – the World’s largest biodiversity survey

The All India Tiger Estimation is among the world’s largest and most comprehensive wildlife assessments. 

The estimation is conducted every four years since 2006, led by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), state forest departments, and conservation NGOs.

The NTCA is a statutory body in India established in 2006 under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to strengthen tiger conservation and manage Project Tiger.

The Authority also monitors tiger reserve management through periodic assessments. Its science-based approach improves habitat protection, improves conservation outcomes and supports the long-term survival of wild tiger populations in India.

In the 2022 assessment, NTCA also included India’s first nationwide survey of ungulates, vital components of ecosystems. The exercise highlighted the importance of healthy prey populations for sustaining viable tiger populations.

The All India Tiger Estimation (2022) places India’s tiger population at 3,682, covering 20 States and surveyed over 6.41 lakh kilometres on foot.

Technology Component of Monitoring the Number of Tigers in India

National Tiger Conservation Authority has integrated advanced digital technologies into every stage of monitoring tigers.  

The Monitoring System for Tigers – Intensive Protection and Ecological Status (M-STrIPES) uses Global Positioning System (GPS), GPRS and remote sensing technologies for field monitoring.

GPS-tagged photographs improve data accuracy and reduce human error. The platform integrates field observations into a central database for scientific analysis and informed decision-making. Artificial intelligence further strengthens monitoring.

Additionally, camera traps are widely used to evaluate tiger populations in India. These cameras are outdoor photographic devices fitted with motion sensors that start recording when an animal passes by. 

The Camera Trap Data Repository and Analysis Tool (CaTRAT) automatically classify camera trap images by species. 

Extract Compare identifies individual tigers using their unique stripe patterns. Collectively, these tools improve the accuracy and reliability of tiger population estimates.

The fourth iteration of the survey, conducted in 2018–19, was recognised as a Guinness World Record as the world’s largest camera trap wildlife survey. 

 

Furthermore, apart from counting numbers, Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) assesses how well tiger reserves are managed.

The framework evaluates planning, protection, management processes and conservation outcomes. It helps identify management gaps and reinforce accountability. By 2022, 51 tiger reserves had been evaluated under the framework.

Twelve reserves received “Excellent” ratings, while the average management score reached 78%. The findings guide policy decisions, strengthen reserve management and support long-term conservation planning.

Measuring and assessing the number of tigers in India is an important exercise because it provides a clear indicator of ecosystem health, stability, and environmental change.

Knowing the tiger population helps scientists, conservationists and government agencies identify areas at high risk of destruction and decide where to focus protection efforts.

A high number of species will mean a healthy ecosystem where many organisms interact and support each other, while sudden drops can signal early warning signs of habitat loss, poaching, and climate change.
