Shilpa Shetty turns Vegetarian – after 45 years what made her take this decision

this is something… that’s a very personal choice, a hard decision for me; seemed impossible at one time, but it felt like a ‘calling’ of sorts.
The shift happened gradually and NOW, I have accepted “vegetarianism” completely. Primarily, because I wanted to reduce my carbon footprint in the environment. Over the years, I’ve realised that cultivating livestock for food, has not only destroyed forests but also been the largest sources of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous-oxide emissions. These are majorly responsible for the climate change our planet is experiencing.

With that statement on her Instagram post, film actress, yoga proponent, and businesswoman Shilpa Shetty Kundra announced her decision to turn vegetarian.

She joined a growing list of film stars – Amitabh Bachchan, Amir Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Alia Bhatt, and Anushka Sharma are some of the popular film celebrities from the Hindi Film industry who have turned vegetarian/vegans. Even the fitness hulks – Shahid Kapoor and John Abraham are also no meat-eater.

Shahid Kapoor turned vegetarian for an interesting reason, he gave up eating meat after reading the book Life is Fair by Brian Hines. PETA, an animal rights organization named Shahid Asia’s sexiest vegetarian in 2011.

Coming back to Shilpa, over the last few years has become a strong and vocal advocate of Yoga. She has been promoting yoga asanas through videos and public gatherings. She has been subjected to many memes with Yoga guru Baba Ramdev in the past.

Humor aside, through her post, Shilpa also provided the health benefits of the plant-based diet

Also, following a vegetarian diet is not only beneficial for animals, but also can actually protect us from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, can improve & also reverse cardiovascular health, and some major diseases. It’s the best change for OUR health and the health of the PLANET.

Like many of us, she also alluded to her non-vegetarian upbringing, which makes it challenging for people to give up meat diets. Making this plunge at the age of 45 is definitely not easy.

Given my roots (Mangalorean), our diet always comprised of certain elements, meals would often feel incomplete without fish/ chicken as they became habits, then becoming an addiction. But ever since I adopted Yoga as a way of life, I always felt incomplete. I needed to step up… 45 years into this journey of life, and I’ve finally made the switch.

In addition, Shilpa is running a successful YouTube channel with more than 2 million subscribers mostly doing cooking videos and bit on fitness & yoga. She has now decided to promote videos of only vegetarian recipes.

In the past, being a hardcore non-vegetarian, even my YouTube channel has a lot of non-vegetarian recipes! I WON’T be deleting any of those, as they have been shot but going forward I WILL be focusing mainly on the vegetarian recipes.
You all are and have been my extended family & my well-wishers for so many years, hence keeping you posted, about this important step.

Here is the post from her account, which informed the world of her decision. Shilpa Shetty’s turning vegetarian might be a piece of passing news for some people, but there would be definitely few in her 16 million+ followers who would take inspiration and make their own decisions.
