Cleaning the Right Way: Eco-friendly Cleaning Products in India

As environmental awareness continues to grow in India, more consumers are rethinking their everyday choices, right down to their cleaning products. Concerns over chemical-laden cleaners, plastic waste, and non-biodegradable packaging have sparked a shift toward safer, more sustainable alternatives.

In response, a new generation of companies is emerging, offering eco-friendly cleaning solutions that are both effective and environmentally responsible.

These products often feature plant-based ingredients, non-toxic formulations, and biodegradable or reusable packaging, making them gentler on both people and the planet.

What was once a niche market is now gaining mainstream attention, driven by a collective push for healthier homes and a cleaner environment.

This article examines how eco-friendly cleaning products in India are responding to this demand, transforming the cleaning industry through innovation, responsibility, and a strong commitment to sustainability. We have also added sustainable brands that cater to business and commercial establishments.

Leading the Path

Ahinsa Care

Faiz - Mitti Se

Ahinsa Care offers eco-friendly cleaning products in India that are free from SLES, Alcohol Ethoxylate, sulfates, phosphates, CTAC, HCl, Sodium Hydroxide, and bleach.

Lucknow-based company offers most of its products in powder and liquid formats, suitable for hand washing, laundry, toilet cleaning, floor cleaning, dishwashing, and other household uses.

In our interaction with Ahinsa Care co-founder Faiz Siddiqui, the man behind the products and formulation, he had underscored the importance of using products that don’t damage our bodies and create havoc on the ecosystem and environment.

He also spoke about the common usage of phenyl in our homes, schools, hospitals, etc. Phenyl contains highly toxic and carcinogenic material, which has the potential to cause attention deficit disorder among children, leading many countries to ban the use of phenyl. Still, we continue to use it in India without recognising the damage it might cause.

In our conversation with Beco’s co-founder, Aditya Ruia, had mentioned, “it is often perceived that eco-friendly consumer products are expensive, lack effectiveness, and are not easily accessible. Probably, due to these notional challenges in the industry, no one acted strongly in the consumer segment. The opportunity to solve the problem at the consumer level in a manner that others have not tried gave us the kick to enter this D2C space.”

Towards a Greener Future

Sustainable and eco-friendly cleaning products in India are undergoing a meaningful transformation, driven by growing environmental concerns and a shift in consumer values.

From reducing single-use plastics and toxic residues to introducing refillable packaging and plant-derived ingredients, companies are rethinking every aspect of cleaning. However, challenges around affordability, regulation, and consumer awareness must be addressed.

Looking ahead, the sector is well-prepared for further growth, whether through alternative formats like concentrates and cleaning sheets, hyper-local production models, or institutional adoption in schools, hospitals, and the hospitality industry.

Government policies are also expected to play a key role, potentially setting clearer standards for biodegradability, safety, and transparency. Furthermore, awareness is necessary to make informed decisions and understand the benefits of green cleaning.

The companies that will lead this shift are those that go beyond marketing claims, offering truly sustainable products that are accessible, trusted, and aligned with modern lifestyles.

With the right ecosystem in place, eco-friendly cleaning can move from being a conscious choice to a common one—cleaning homes without compromising the health of our environment.
